Flashback 2012, I’m starting grad school at EKU for Industrial Organizational Psychology. I wanted to be an external consultant working for a big company getting experience with a bunch of different industries. I wanted to live in a big city and I saw myself in a high rise apartment beautifully furnished with lights all around.
At the time, I didn’t know anything about the law of attraction, self coaching, or self help. But not knowing this, the more I thought about that goal, the more I started creating it for myself. By the time it was in my life and I was full on living it (2017) I didn’t even realize what I had created. It was just, that was who I was.
So now, 2019, I think about my future self. She is in a free, airy, white, bohemian vibe beach house with baby Marilyn (blonde curly hair beautiful fucking baby girl). She practices daily meditation, yoga, and stretching. She doesn’t drink nor has a desire to. She lives organically and loves mother nature. She is a successful life coach, writer, and speaker who is well known for helping women around the world move past heartbreak and into the life of their dreams. She’s independent AF and is a bomb badass business woman.
What does this mean? For this to be my reality, I must start living from my future self. I must start thinking, feeling and acting as if I’m already there. As if I’ve already arrived. What would future Dorothy do? Instead of seeking external advice find it internally because only future Dorothy knows what’s best for her.
Have you done this? Have you taken a moment to identify what does your future self look like? Feel like? What is she/he surrounded with? What have they accomplished? What does that look like for you?
It’s so interesting how simple things can be for our future self. I think about people who don’t have any debt, what are they thinking about? Future Dorothy has no debt, which means, she isn’t thinking about debt, she isn’t focused on it. She’s focused on making money, investing, planning for her future. That’s very different.
Take time this month to get to know your future self.
Write out a description of your future self.
What do you look like?
What are you wearing?
What surrounds you?
Who surrounds you?
What does it smell like?
What have you accomplished?
Build a vision board.
Create a vision board including everything you’ve outlined above. If you don’t know how to make a vision board here is a worksheet to help you.
Write a letter to your past self.
Think back to a time you were struggling that you overcame. Write a letter to your past self. What would you have told yourself? What do you wish you wouldn’t have worry about? What do you wish you could have told yourself in that moment?
Write a letter to your current self from your future self.
Now, drop yourself into your future self. What would she be saying to you right now? What would you tell yourself right now before you go and try to accomplish your goals? What would she tell you not to worry about? What would you tell yourself in this moment?
Would love to hear what you came up with!
With love and positive vibes,
Dorothy
